Jan Montyn was born as 'Jan Montijn' in Oudewater, the Netherlands.

Jan Montyn's father, house decorator and painter 1930-1938
Jan Montyn's father was a house decorator and painter. As of the age of six, Jan Montyn worked one hour a day to learn the profession. During these years Jan Montyn's father taught him about minerals and raw colouring matters and techniques. Already at a young age Jan would start drawing.

Elementary school 1938
After finishing elementary school at the age of 14, Jan Montyn was destined to work in his father's business. Jan Montyn would choose however to follow a different river of life.

Scouting I 1940
In a youth camp in the Netherlands Jan is taught scouting, including exploring, reading compasses and lighting fires.

Scouting II 1943
In a youth camp in the Austrian alps Jan is taught advanced scouting, including mountain climbing, skiing, air rifle shooting and survival tours.

Seaman training 1944
In Mannheim, Germany, Jan Montyn receives a classical seaman training, including rope handling, rope tying, rowing, sailing and deck scrubbing.

Parachutist 1945
During a two months training by the Foreign Legion in Algeria, Jan Montyn was trained to become a parachutist

Restoring and forging paintings 1946 - 1947
In the youth prison camp in Scheveningen, the pre-war restorer of Rembrandt's 'Nachtwacht' ('Night Watch') teaches Jan Montyn how to restore and forge paintings.

House and decoration painter 1948 - 1950
Jan Montyn works in Oudewater, in his father's business, as a house and decoration painter.

Master Painter 1948 - 1950
Jan Montyn studies Master Painter at the 'Vakschool voor Meester Schilder' ("The technical school for Master Painter") in Utrecht.

In duty as a professional soldier, Jan Montyn is trained as Military Inspector in Weert.

Sergeant 1954
Jan Montyn is raised to the rank of Sergeant.

Instructor of the Grenadier Regiment of Guards 1954-1955
Jan Montyn is appointed instructor of the grenadier regiment of guards, her Majesty's corps of honour. While on duty, the commander, Taets van Amerongen, requests Jan Montyn to resurrect the museum of the Regiment of Guards. During the war the museum was cleaned out and the objects were divided among the folks, to prevent them from being confiscated by the Germans.

Curator of the grenadier regiment of guards' museum 1955 -1956
Jan Montyn is appointed the then youngest curator in The Netherlands. His tasks were to trace, expand, rubricate, repair and exhibit the museum objects. Jan Montyn fully resurrected the museum of the regiment of guards. He collected and restored uniforms, old weapons, utensils up to the tin cans of the 'Ten Day Field Battle' and the food case of King Willem III. Jan Montyn also restored paintings. In his role Jan Montyn mingled with the elite, including the Prince of the Netherlands.

As advisor to the museum of the Marine Corps, Jan Montyn sets up a museum for the Marine Corps.

Jan Montyn in 'The Kolk' 1959 - 1964
Together with other starting artists, like Lucassen, and Zoltin Peter, Jan Montyn rents a sizeable storehouse at the Oude Zijdse Kolk in the heart of the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

[ Professional artist ] 1964 - TODAY
Jan Montyn builds his second home Haut Provence a Salernes in France. Until today the majority of his art works are made in Salernes.

[ International relief worker ] 1968 - 2004
After having received 6 months of medical training, Jan Montyn gets involved in child transports, medicine transports and local relief work, which includes clearing of landmines, both in war and post-war locations. He will continue to do so until 2004.

[ World student ] 1968 - TODAY
Jan Montyn is still at school. In his words: "We learn everyday. If just you are willing to set aside your prejudices, being open minded to the world and to any person that you encounter, you will continue to learn until your last day".
